Lose lose for the high street?

Robert Jenrick's plans to allow blanket redevelopment of retail to residential under permitted development rights continue to cause significant concern for those looking to the future of the UK's high street. 

As business failures and vacancy rates climb, opening the door to residential development may seem a logical reallocation of unwanted space but the reality is that successful retail and residential estates are carefully curated rather than being the result of unrestrained market forces.

A coalition of nearly 30 groups representing high street shops, property developers and planners have written to housing secretary Robert Jenrick urging him to abandon plans for an “uncontrolled” expansion of residential conversions.
