Tips for SMEs thinking about digital transformation

Raconteur has been looking at what SMEs can do to kickstart their digital transformation, and overcome their fear of the process.

From a legal perspective, the important thing for SMEs to remember is that if you “click through” to agree a contract as a business, you are not protected in the same way that a consumer is when they agree an online contract.

SMEs should take time to review the contract and make sure they can get out of a contract that is not working.

An SME actively engaged in a digital transformation project should also consider:

  • if and how the different digital tools they are thinking of using work together
  • how they will keep them all up to date and working together in the future
  • when engaging a specialist to assist with this kind of project, ensure that they
    • officially take on responsibility to deliver a working solution
    • give the SME ownership rights (or at least the right to use on an ongoing basis) in anything they create that the company is paying for.
Although the pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises, many firms in this category have yet to take the plunge, intimidated by factors such as the potentially high cost and their lack of in-house tech skills.
