CMA to assess music streaming industry

Earlier this week the CMA announced plans to carry out a market study on music streaming. The CMA is still determining the final scope of the market study, but intends to formally launch it "as soon as possible".

The proposed study follows the DCMS Select Committee Report on the Economics of Music Streaming (which we considered here) and a letter from DCMS to the CMA asking it to consider the matter.

Given the breadth of the Report, which covered issues ranging from the dominance of the 'majors', to creator remuneration and access to popular playlists, it will be interesting to see the final parameters of the CMA study and what these suggest for the chances of a significant shake-up in the industry.

Over the past decade, the music industry has evolved almost beyond recognition, with streaming now accounting for more than 80% of all music listened to in this country.
